If you’re in Southern California and tired of the cloudy “May gray” skies, get ready — a major heat wave is on the way.
According to the National Weather Service, temperatures will rise quickly by Friday, bringing hot and sunny weather to the region. Coastal cities like Santa Monica, Torrance, and areas near LAX will see temperatures in the mid-70s to 80s, while inland areas like the San Fernando Valley and San Gabriel Valley could hit 100 degrees by Saturday.
“It’s going to be much warmer than normal,” said meteorologist Rose Schoenfeld, who added that some places could be 10 to 20 degrees hotter than usual.

Even if there’s no official heat warning, experts advise people to stay indoors during peak heat, avoid heavy outdoor work, and drink plenty of water.
Heat can be especially dangerous for the elderly and those with health issues. In the past, heatwaves have led to hundreds of deaths, especially among seniors without air conditioning.
Good news? The heat won’t last long. Sunday (Mother’s Day) will start to cool down, and by Monday, temperatures will drop back into the low to mid-70s, even going slightly below normal in some areas.
